Liberal Democrat Statement: Labour continue to lose ground in Hammersmith & Fulham

The recent resignation of Labour councillors in Hammersmith & Fulham confirms what we’ve been hearing on the doorsteps for months: Labour no longer represents this borough — or the country.

Cllr Trey Campbell-Simon didn’t hold back. He said: ‘The Hammersmith and Fulham Labour group have a culture of control,' where councillors are expected to ‘do as the leader says and not have an opinion.’ He called this a ‘momentous moment' for the borough — a chance to bring ‘real representation and accountability’ after years of Labour’s unchecked dominance.

Cllr Liz Collins spoke of a ‘top-down, toxic culture’ in Labour, adding that the party no longer tolerates diverse views. ‘I found a culture where councillors are punished for speaking up, and where resident voices are too often ignored,’ she said.

These statements echo what we’re hearing from residents every day: people are tired of Labour's arrogance and its closed-off, centralised politics.

And crucially, the councillors made clear the Conservatives are no alternative either. Cllr Campbell-Simon was explicit: ‘The Conservatives provide no meaningful opposition in this borough.’ That’s something we’ve heard time and again on the doorstep — people want real, progressive alternatives, not a return to Tory mismanagement.

The Liberal Democrats offer that alternative. We’ve seen voters beginning to turn to us from Labour, increasing our vote share while Labour’s fell in the Lillie and Hammersmith and Broadway by-elections and getting more votes than Labour in the recent Fulham Town by-election.

We believe in open, accountable, community-first politics. We’ll keep fighting for causes like getting double glazing from social housing providers, parking bays for hire bikes so they aren’t discarded on the street and reporting and chasing the council to fix broken street lamps, graffiti and illegal dumping. If even Labour’s own councillors are walking away, it's time for voters to have the chance to do the same. Let's bring balance, integrity and real progress back to Hammersmith and Fulham.
