H&F LibDems call on MPs to vote against Government's Heathrow expansion plans

Today members of Parliament will vote on wether to expand Heathrow airport. The Liberal Democrats are the only party to have consistently opposed this expansion including blocking plans put forward by the Labour government as early as 2006 and the Conservatives in 2010.

Opposing Heathrow expansion was in our last national manifesto and this policy was defended by local and national Liberal Democrat candidates in the past few elections. This policy is of course supported by an overwhelming majority of residents in Hammersmith and Fulham and across West London.

They support this policy because an expansion will irrevocably damage our environment, put public health at risk, and create an unimaginable amount of stress on already congested transport infrastructure. The Liberal Democrats have proposed alternatives such as the strengthening of regional airports in the South East and Midlands, combined with a high speed rail link to London Crossrail.

Therefore, we call on all Members of Parliament including Hammersmith MP Andy Slaughter and Chelsea & Fulham MP Greg Hands to defy their own party policy and vote with the Liberal Democrats to oppose expansion of Heathrow.

Florian Chevoppe-Verdier

Chair of the Hammersmith & Fulham Liberal Democrats
