Greg Hands, MP for Chelsea & Fulham, votes against support for feeding children until Easter 2021 - Hammersmith and Fulham Liberal Democrats

A letter from H&F Lib Dem Exec Member Dr.Tamara Dragadze:

Greg Hands, our Fulham MP, regrettably voted against children in need having a free meal during breaks and holidays when there is no school. Every Lib Dem MP, of course, voted for children to get direct help in the way Marcus Rashford had advocated, a footballer who in his childhood depended on free school meals. Furthermore, the Lib Dem Councils of London Boroughs of Kingston and of Sutton immediately put in place such a service so that no child should go hungry outside of school term.

It means that Greg Hands and MPs like him can put their party loyalty before the welfare of the children of their constituents while local Councils pick up the pieces of their devastating votes.

We are fortunate in our Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham that the Labour Council also instantaneously decided to provide hot meals for children in need during the holidays.

Ironically, the other part of Greg Hands’ constituency, Chelsea, has also benefitted from the Council of Kensington and Chelsea voting through a program to help children have essential, hot meals during the school break. This is despite having a Conservative MP who followed Greg Hands and voted against school meals. The Conservative Council there itself defied the government led by their own party, to establish a free meals program.

Had Nicola Horlick won the Fulham seat in the last General Election, she would have put her conscience first, as did all the LibDem MPs, to help children directly who need it in these difficult times. All children deserve to have at least one hot meal a day, especially as winter sets in.
